Burns

Burns are a common household or industry injury, but many people are unsure exactly what to do to assist someone who has suffered a burn.

Here’s what you should do:

a Place the burn under cold running water for a minimum of 10 minutes
a Cover the burn and keep the dressing moist
a Remove constrictive clothing or jewellery before swelling occurs
a Be aware that burns to the face and neck can also affect the airway
a Reassure the patient

Here’s what you should not do

a Don’t apply creams ointments or butter
a Don’t use adhesive dressings
a Don’t touch or remove anything stuck to the burn
