While the focus of Wellington Free Ambulance is on providing emergency paramedical services to the Greater Wellington area, additionally we also provide a Non-Emergency Patient Transport (NEPT) service.
Primary functions of the Patient Transport service
As per our contract with the Ministry of Health - to safely move patients from hospital to hospital, or from hospital to a specialist unit (such as a rehabilitation or burns unit).
As per our contract with the DHB of domicile - to safely move patients from one hospital to another, or to/from the Life Flight NZ fixed wing air ambulance service at Wellington Airport.
Patient Transport Vehicles
Wellington Free Ambulance operates four Fiat Ducato ambulances as part of their NEPT fleet - these vehicles operate from 7am-7pm Monday to Friday. Although not equipped the same as a frontline ambulance, these vehicles contain emergency equipment such as an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator), oxygen and general first aid gear.
Patient Transport Officers (PTO's)
Patient Transport Officers have basic paramedic training (to PHEC standard) as well as driver training. There is normally one PTO officer per NEPT ambulance.
