t9 Sep 2011 - Cutting edge uniform locally designed and made

The Christchurch earthquake was a tough final testing ground for the new Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic uniform, but it proved to be up to the mark and sealed the end of an extensive period of development and field trials.

The new uniform was initiated by the Wellington Free Ambulance board who wanted a fresh new look for the capital’s iconic ambulance service.

A man was trapped in his truck after it rolled forty metres down a bank on Rimutaka Hill Road.

Two Wellington Free Ambulance rescue four-wheel drives and two road ambulances are at the scene.

t23 Aug 2011 - Wellington Free launch capital's first PAD

Wellington city’s first alarmed public access automatic external defibrillator will be formally launched on Thursday 25 August.

The public access defibrillator will be located at the Wellington Railway Station, next to the Customer Service Enquiry Desk.

t16 Aug 2011 - Paramedics save snowbound boy

The Wellington Free Ambulance Rescue Squad was called into the Akatawara’s north of Upper Hutt to save a 14 month old boy suffering from acute shortness of breath at 3:30pm yesterday.

Wellington Free Ambulance Rescue Sqaud paramedics had to negotiate heavy snow to access the young boy’s house.

t15 Aug 2011 - Four Wheel Drive Rescue Squad Deployed

The Wellington Free Ambulance Rescue Squad was deployed on Sunday to escort frontline ambulances through snow covered roads and driveways.

“Some roads in Karori, Johnsonville, Wainuiomata, Naenae and Ngaio were snowbound, making access difficult for frontline ambulances,” Wellington Free Ambulance Team Manager James McMeekin said.

The Wellington Free Ambulance is currently trialling a new programme that looks at treating emergency callouts in the home.

It's a far cry from the usual job of an ambulance - transporting people to hospital - but as Luca De Jong reports, it's in it's third year of funding and the programme is easing the load on the region's hospitals.

Wellington Free Ambulance is presenting its inaugural Safer Community Award to the East Harbour First Response Trust to acknowledge the group’s community defibrillator programme.

The Eastbourne Community Response Trust has been raising funds for the past 10 years to place Automatic External Defibrillators (AED’s) into Eastbourne.

t 7 July 2011 - Wellington Free Ambulance reminds cyclists

Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics have responded to an incident on the corner of The Terrace and Salamanca Road this afternoon. The incident occurred at 3:45pm and involved a collision between a cyclist and a bus.

The 22 year old male patient received advanced emergency medical treatment at the scene and was transferred urgently to Wellington Hospital with head and leg injuries.

t6 July 2011 - Ambulance base for Wellington party central

Injured and drunk late-night revellers in Courtenay Place will receive treatment from medics and a Wellington Free Ambulance unit based there, in an attempt to relieve pressure on the hospital's emergency department.

The incident occurred at 12:18pm and involved a window cleaner falling from approximately the 5th floor of a high rise office building.

Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics responded to an incident on Willis Street this afternoon.

The incident occurred at 1:09pm and involved a collision between a pedestrian and a bus. The female patient received advanced emergency treatment at the scene and was transferred urgently to Wellington Hospital in a critical condition.

t1 June 2011 - Fijians to benefit from ambulance donation

Thousands of Fijians will have access to an emergency ambulance thanks to the generosity of Rotary and Wellington Free Ambulance.

Rotary has purchased an ex-frontline emergency ambulance from Wellington Free Ambulance and plans to ship the vehicle, fully equipped, to the Fijian Island of Tavenui.

Thousands of Kapiti Coast residents will continue to have access to a treat-at-home health service thanks to new funding announced today by Otaki MP Nathan Guy.

t24 Mar 2011 - Odlin Trust Regional Ambulance Station opens

The Right Honourable John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand, today opened the country’s newest ambulance station, The Odlin Trust Regional Ambulance Station, operated by Wellington Free Ambulance.

The new regional station is adjacent to ED at Wellington Hospital, and allows Wellington Free Ambulance to reduce response times for patient callouts and provide a better patient experience.

t23 Feb 2011 - WFA Rescue Squad deployed to Christchurch

Wellington Free Ambulance has deployed its specialised Paramedic Rescue Squad into Christchurch overnight.

The first four Rescue Paramedics were airlifted into Christchurch at 4pm yesterday, with a further eight Paramedics and four vehicles including 2 frontline ambulances and 2 fully equipped off road vehicles, were deployed on a ferry sailing yesterday.

Wellington Free Ambulance has been quick to respond to earthquake devastated Christchurch in the hours following the tragedy.

Within minutes of the earthquake striking emergency 111 ambulance calls were diverted from Christchurch to Wellington’s Central Emergency Communications Centre.

Wellington Free Ambulance announced today that it will deploy medics on mountain bikes for the first time in the organisations 85 year history.

The mountain bikes will bolster the event unit, which also includes a specially equipped quad bike, 4-wheel drive utility and a fleet of dedicated road ambulances.

Wellington Free Ambulance’s advanced driver training is heading down a new track.

Now, with support from Craig Shepherd’s company Harbour City Security, and Boomrock Station’s private driver training circuit, paramedics can learn advanced skills at a local purpose built facility.

A brand new Mitsubishi Pajero joined the Wellington Free Ambulance fleet in July. The rapid response Pajero is operated by the duty team manager, providing clinical support and incident command 24 hours-a-day.

Paramedicst8 July 2010 - New Rotary ambulance on the road

Two and a half years of hard work and determination by the Rotary clubs of greater Wellington has resulted in a new frontline ambulance for Wellington Free.

Representatives from several Rotary groups met with CEO Alan O’Beirne in early July, handing over the final cheque for the new vehicle – to be named the ‘Rotary Ambulance.
